Mulgimaa Noorteorkester aka MNO (Mulgimaa Youth Orchestra) was founded in the autumn of 2017 by musician and school principal Margus Põldsepp. Led by teachers from Karksi-Nuia Music School, most members originally came from there, but now they've grown to represent all of Mulgi Parish. It's truly a community orchestra – including music school alumni, students' parents, and other family members. They've performed at local events, Mulgi Festivals, Viljandi Folk Music Festival, Viru Folk, and Hiiu Folk.
Their repertoire spans polkas to rock, and everyone truly plays their own instrument – from trumpets to saxophones, not to mention kannels and electric guitars!
The orchestra includes the ensembles:
LõõtsanøøbidA boys’ folk music ensemble from Karksi-Nuia Music School, active since 2020, and frequently featured on television. In 2025, they received the “Golden Record” award for Best Newcomer at the Estonian Pop Music Awards. In 2024, the ensemble released their album Mulk om iki uhke miis.
Red'seThe folk band Red'se was formed in autumn 2024 at Karksi-Nuia Music School on the initiative of senior students and alumni. The girls take great joy in playing their instruments and wish to share that joy with audiences. The ensemble aims to honour the traditions of Mulgimaa while also looking outward with a broader perspective. The band’s name means “determined, diligent, hardworking, resourceful, proud” in the Mulgi language – “sounds just like our band!”, the girls say. Their music features chromatic kannel, bagpipes, clarinet, accordion, violins, mandolin, and vocals.
Mulgimaa Noorde JatsuorkesterThe ensemble grew out of a local windorchestra in 2019 and operates in Karksi-Nuia Music School. In spring 2024, they recorded their debut album “I Feel Good” at the Karksi-Nuia Youth Centre recording studio. The ensemble is led by Riina Kogan and Anton Kogan.
Viljandi LõõtsakvintettA student ensemble based at Viljandi Music School, led by instructors Rasmus Kadaja and Margus Põldsepp.
Põldsepp & PojadA local Viljandi version of Untsakad, revitalised in 2024 when Rasmus Kadaja and Ott-Mait Põldsepp began working at Karksi-Nuia Music School. Together with Margus Põldsepp, they form the ensemble Põldsepp & Pojad (Põldsepp & Sons in Estonian).
LõõtsavägilasedAn ensemble founded in 2014 at Karksi-Nuia Music School, which has released five albums.
